Does anyone know if the birth marriage and death records are available to view online? I've been to one or two sites, but they all seem to give the volume and page number rather than the actual date - is there anywhere online where I can view dates, or is it still a case of buying a copy of the certificate?

No, not yet anyway though I think there is a project by the PRO to do this but it has been stalled. Even when this is available it will not be free and I expect will be about the same cost as at present.
