Hi all, i was looking at getting a book on family history for a friend for christmas, she was interested in starting to trace her ancestors.

does anyone have any recommendations for a good starting book?

You could try "Tracing Your Family History" by Anthony Adolph, or "Ancestral Trails" by Mark D Herber.

If they want to do their research online, it might be worth looking at "The Genealogist's Internet" by Peter Christian.
